Fugen Constructions completed a $6m refurbishment of the Wollongong Mental Health Unit. The vast, bright foyer is filled with light spilling in from the grand upper atrium. The first floor - the building's central treatment area has been outfitted with 12 consulting suites where psychiatrists can meet patients. On the upper levels 70 luxury rooms, 20 of which can doubles, with impressive views over Wollongong.
The modification works to the Bathurst Heritage Hospital included the fitout of consultation rooms, staff offices & amenities, library, gymnasium, rehabilitation & physiotherapy areas, and ambulatory care facility. As well as additions and interior fitout to the main building, the building underwent structural rectification to bring the heritage building into line with current structural codes. Exterior works including balconies were also carried out.
The Dudley Private Hospital works include the construction of a new gymnasium, several consultation rooms, new nurses stations and a new ADL kitchen, which join the existing building. Followed by the reinstatement of two existing ward rooms, whilst the hospital remains functional.

This refurbishment consists of a full upgrades of the existing Pool area including new wet edge gutters, tiled finishes, a state of the art filtration system, reception office fit out and staff/client change room’s. Materials handling and access are strictly managed, along with loud operations through communication with hospital management.
Our works included the design and construction of a 1200 square metre extension to Lake Macquarie Specialist Medical Centre and the establishment of a new Day Chemotherapy Unit and Breast Clinic for Ramsay Health Care. The project was delivered on time and budget whilst overcoming issues with ground water, obtaining mine subsidence board approval and working to minimise disruption to the ongoing operations of the existing Medical Centre.
Construction works at Norwest Private Hospital consisted of the complete refurbishment of Level 2 Medical Suites and modification to the existing hospital and construction of new Operating Theatre 11. The project objective was to complete the works whilst keeping the hospital in operation throughout construction with minimal disruption. Fugen understood the responsibility to ensure that the suites where suitable for business operations at the end of each and every work session.
This project included major structural modifications as well as a total refurbishment of wards and facilities over 4 floors. We refurbished 54 beds and ensuites, installed 15 new bathrooms and modified staff and consulting areas. We also upgraded the building’s services and constructed a new hydrotherapy pool within the former ground floor car park. Despite the extensive and complex nature of this work, we were able to keep the hospital working throughout the project.
Nepean Private Hospital was completed in two stages over a four-month period. Works consisted of staged refurbishment of existing wards into new recovery wards, a new daytime surgery clinic and two new operating theatres, including complete services upgrade throughout Level 1. Level 1 was occupied by operating theatres, intensive care unit and high dependency unit, all of which remained operational through the construction period.
This project for Healthscope at the Hills Private Hospital was centred around a new Hydrotherapy Unit. Our works include the construction of new pool, plant room, reception and change facilities within the existing hospital building. All works were planned and co-ordinated to take account of the hospital’s operations taking place in existing facilities. Not an easy feat, as construction included major internal demolition of load bearing walls and floor slabs.
The construction of new laboratories, animal testing facilities, offices, workspaces and a loading dock was central to this project. All works, including the construction of a two-storey extension, were undertaken adjacent to live research facilities. Meticulous planning to provide temporary staging spaces allowed the project to be delivered smoothly.
Refurbishment of the existing rehabilitation hospital, including the construction of two new wings, holding 40 rooms and 43 bathrooms. The facilities remained operational while these works were carried out. Delivered on schedule and to the highest quality standards.
Over the last couple of years we have undertaken a series of projects for the Garvan, including refurbishments: sometimes entire floors to accommodate growing staff numbers; sometimes smaller projects like upgrading a cafeteria; all while vital and sensitive research work continued. Across all these projects we have consistently made recommendations that have reduced cost, improved functionality, and made the building more efficient.
Another project for Ramsay, this work—over four stages—refurbished various wards, public areas, offices and corridors as well as 46 refurbished beds and 41 ensuites and adding 7 new beds. The project also including cardiac and intensive care units, construction of a cafeteria, a new conference facility and consultation areas. Like many of our hospital projects, we were required to work effectively around the daily operations of the hospital.
The works consisted of all necessary fixtures, finishes & equipment to the building to enable the fitout of the Radiotherapy Bunker 2 to the exact specification finish & completion, as the existing Radiotherapy Bunker 1 was located within the Orange Health Service Radiotherapy Department. Co-ordination of Radiation equipment from Varian & strict guidelines on installation of finishes & equipment was managed effectively, working in & around operating theatres.
We cut our teeth in the health and medical field building medical centres. In the last five or six years we have undertaken more than 15 such projects. From relatively small sites to landmark centres such as the Darlinghurst and Bondi Junction centres, valued at $7 million and $6 million respectively. These large centres also included specialist facilities like x-ray and CT scan rooms.
Our project at Strathfield Private Hospital involves extensions to the existing sterile stockroom whilst the surrounding area remains operational. The modular building is supported on structural steel framework, and spans between two wings of the existing building on the third level. The works will be completed late February and will be our 5th job that Fugen Constructions has completed for the Strathfield Hospital.
